BAT’s Illegal Factories and Violations ; Factory Operations and Lack of Authorization

Description of my first part story:

The Factories: British American Tobacco (BAT) has been running multiple tobacco processing factories in Kushtia and other locations like Khaja Nagar, Allah Dargah, Meherpur, Jhenaidah, and Chuadanga without proper government registration or permits. In Kushtia, BAT operates factories that are not officially authorized by the Department of Factory and Establishment. In fact, BAT has set up operations in various places, despite government investigations revealing these factories have been illegally operational.

Tobacco Processing in Kushtia: BAT has a significant tobacco processing factory in Mirpur and Chechua, Kushtia, which employs hundreds of workers.  BAT is using a loophole in labor law by labeling the factories as seasonal, claiming they are allowed to operate only for 125 days per year. However, evidence gathered shows these factories are often running throughout the year.

Labor Violations: Workers at BAT’s factories are subjected to harsh labor practices, including forced labor on holidays. This violates 45 provisions of the labor law. According to investigations, BAT is exploiting workers by not adhering to the minimum wage laws, failing to provide appropriate benefits, and forcing employees to work beyond legal limits.

Key Investigations:

Government Investigation: A 2024 government report found that BAT’s factories in Kushtia and other districts are operating illegally.  BAT was advised to register the factories properly and comply with the labor laws. Despite this, BAT continues to flout these rules.

Government and Labor Officials’ Statement: Zahirul Hossain, a Deputy Director at the Regional Labor Department of Kushtia, confirmed that BAT’s factories are in clear violation of the laws. The government has conducted an inquiry and is pushing for BAT to comply with regulations.

Mohammad Toufiqur Rahman, the District Commissioner, warned that no company should operate without proper approval. He confirmed that the administration will take action if violations are noticed.

Helipad and Resort-Like Amenities at BAT Sites : Although officially designated as tobacco processing plants, British American Tobacco (BAT) Bangladesh sites are running without government approval and are equipped with lavish amenities that stand in stark contrast to the harsh realities faced by their workers. These sites boast golf courses, tennis courts, five-star, multi-storied accommodations, and even helipads. The extravagance of these facilities underscores the company’s wealth and luxury, while workers continue to endure underpayment, long hours, and unsafe working conditions. It’s perplexing that BAT Bangladesh continues to violate local labor laws and workers’ rights with impunity. Is this the corporate culture we should expect from a multinational giant? The disregard for both the law and human dignity speaks volumes about the company’s true priorities. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wv8vzZK0p5s&t=108s
