Gabura Residents Pay for Every Pitcher of Water

In Southern last part of Bangladesh, Gabura Union, the last union of Shyamnagar upazila in Satkhira, people live surrounded by saline water from shrimp farms and face an acute shortage of drinking water.

About a year and a half ago, a private organization installed a water filter pump in the Lakshikhali area, bringing some relief to around 400–500 families. However, residents must buy each pitcher of drinking water for 5 taka, which is a heavy burden for poor families.

Previously, locals had to rely on distant ponds for drinking water. Now women often walk long distances to collect water from the filter pump twice a day. The pump also supplies water to a local madrasa.

Residents say if the filtered water tank were larger, it could meet the demand of more families in the area.
