Dhaka, Feb 17, 2026 — Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Tarique Rahman was sworn in on Monday as the country’s 11th Prime Minister, following his party’s landslide victory in last week’s parliamentary elections.
The oath-taking ceremony was held at the South Plaza of the National Parliament complex, where 25 cabinet ministers and 25 state ministers were also sworn in. The oath was administered by Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin.

The ceremony formally marked the end of the interim administration led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus. With the formation of the new government, parliamentary democracy has formally resumed in Bangladesh, raising expectations of greater political stability in the coming period.
The BNP secured an overwhelming majority in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad elections held on February 12, winning 213 of the 300 seats in parliament and forming a single-party government.
Tarique Rahman belongs to one of Bangladesh’s most influential political families. His mother, Begum Khaleda Zia, was the country’s first female prime minister and served three terms in office, while his father, Ziaur Rahman, was a former president. With Rahman’s elevation, three members of the same family have now held the nation’s highest executive offices—a record that draws parallels with India’s Nehru–Gandhi family, where Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and Rajiv Gandhi each served as Prime Minister.
The interim government had administered the country for more than a year and a half after assuming power following a student-led mass uprising on August 5, 2024. The uprising led to the ouster of long-serving Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled the country and is currently staying in India after 15 consecutive years in power.
