The current government is to turn the anti-tobacco ordinance, approved during the previous interim administration, into law. However, it is reportedly trying to do so by strategically removing the provision that bans the import, production, and sale of all types of e-cigarettes. This move poses a serious threat to public health, in my view.
At the same time, the government is also considering withdrawing the provision that prohibits the display and promotion of tobacco products at points of sale. I urge the government to pass the tobacco control law as it was passed by the interim government.
Thanks to the Reporter Tuhin Shubhra Adhikary The Daily Star, has reported on this issue, stating:
“The government is set to amend the anti-tobacco ordinance, withdrawing the ban on the production and sale of e-cigarettes, raising serious public health concerns.”
